Baratza Forte BG vs. Forte AP: Which Commercial Grinder Is Right for You?

October 29, 2026 – Kristin Faison

The Forte is Baratza's commercial grinder, built from metal and designed for cafés, offices, and homes that go through a lot of coffee. It comes in two versions that look nearly the same from across the room. Choosing between them comes down to two questions: do you make espresso, and how do you want to dose?

The short version

  • Forte AP ($849.95): "All Purpose." Flat ceramic burrs, handles espresso through French press, grinds by time or by weight.
  • Forte BG ($899.95): "Brew Grinder." Flat steel burrs tuned for filter coffee, grinds by weight. No espresso.

What they share

  • A commercial-grade metal body built for heavy daily use
  • A 260-step adjustment: macro steps for big changes and micro steps for fine tuning
  • A touchscreen with programmable presets
  • Baratza's serviceable design, with replaceable parts and a U.S. support network

The real difference: burrs

Forte AP: ceramic flat burrs

Ceramic burrs stay sharp for a long time and stay cool while grinding. They're well suited to espresso, where heat and consistency at very fine settings matter most, and they handle filter grinds well too. That range is why the AP is the one to buy if you make both.

Forte BG: steel flat burrs

The BG's steel flat burrs are cut for filter brewing: pour-over, drip, batch brew, and Chemex. Steel burrs are often described as producing a slightly brighter, clearer cup at filter grind sizes. The trade-off is that the BG isn't set up for espresso at all. If you ever plan to pull shots, it's the wrong grinder.

Dosing: time vs. weight

The AP lets you choose. Grind by time for speed, or switch to weight-based dosing with the built-in scale when you want accuracy. The BG grinds by weight, which makes sense for filter brewing, where you're often grinding larger doses and want them exact every time.

Not sure how much weight-based dosing matters? Our grind by weight vs. grind by time guide goes through it.

Who should buy a Forte at all

Be honest with yourself here: most homes don't need a commercial grinder. A Sette 270 or Vario+ makes excellent coffee for a household and costs a lot less. The Forte makes sense if you:

  • Brew for a large household or host often
  • Run an office coffee bar, a small café, or a pop-up
  • Grind several pounds of coffee a week
  • Want a grinder built to outlast everything else on your counter

Which Forte?

  • Buy the AP if espresso is part of the plan, now or later, or if you want the flexibility of time or weight dosing.
  • Buy the BG if you're building a serious pour-over or batch-brew setup and you're certain espresso isn't in the picture.

If you're grinding for filter coffee only and don't need commercial volume, the Fiorenzato AllGround ProBrew is a single-dose alternative worth comparing. And for the full Baratza lineup, see our Baratza grinder comparison.
