The Baratza Encore is the grinder most coffee shops point first-time customers to when they ask "what should I buy at home?" Forty grind settings, conical steel burrs, and a price that doesn't gate-keep specialty coffee behind a thousand-dollar entry fee. It's built for pour-over, drip, AeroPress, French press, and Chemex; the kind of grinder that pays for itself the first week you stop buying pre-ground.

Why it works

  • 40 grind settings, fine to coarse. Wide enough range that one grinder covers V60, AeroPress, drip, French press, and cold brew without compromise on any of them.
  • Conical steel burrs, German-made. Designed in Seattle, burrs produced in Germany. Replacement parts are stocked and serviceable, which is rare in this price band.
  • Pulse button. Quick top-offs, dose corrections, and chamber purges between bean changes. Small feature that ends up being the most-used button on the grinder.
  • Baratza's U.S. service network. If something fails, you call Baratza directly and they ship parts. Most starter grinders skip this; the Encore is the one that doesn't.

Setup and care notes

The Encore is meant to be used and lived with, not babied. Run a few grams of beans through after unboxing to season the burrs, then pick a starting setting based on your brew method (15 for AeroPress, 20 for V60, 30 for French press is a reasonable starting map) and adjust by feel from there. A soft brush every couple of weeks keeps the burr chamber clean.

Who it's for, who it isn't

It fits anyone moving off pre-ground for the first time, plus pour-over, drip, AeroPress, and immersion brewers who want repeatable grind without spending in Fellow or Baratza Vario territory. It's not the right pick for dedicated espresso; the Encore can grind fine enough, but for daily espresso work the Encore ESP or a step-up like the Sette 270 is the better tool.
